Používání předminulého průběhového času

Tento čas je podobný jako předpřítomný průběhový čas, rozdíl je v tom, že se vztahuje k události v minulosti, nikoli v přítomnosti. I zde nás však více než výsledek zajímá proces.

We had been trying to open the door for five minutes when Jane found her key.
It had been raining hard for several hours and the streets were very wet.
Her friends had been thinking of calling the police when she walked in.

Tento tvar se používá také v nepřímé řeči jako ekvivalent minulého/předpřítomného průběhového času z řeči přímé:

Jane said, "I have been gardening all afternoon." = Jane said she had been gardening all afternoon.
When the police questioned him, John said, "I was working late in the office that night." = When the police questioned him, John told them
he had been working late in the office that night.

Tvoření předminulého průběhového času

Minulý průběhový čas se skládá ze dvou částí: předminulého času slovesa to be (=had been) + přítomného příčestí (slovesný kořen + ing).

Podmět	had been	sloveso + ing
I	had been	walking

She	hadn't been	sleeping
