Slovesa, po nichž následuje infinitiv

Po mnoha slovesech v angličtině stojí (nebo může stát) další sloveso v infinitivním tvaru. Všechna slovesa uvedená v následujících tabulkách se pojí
s infinitivem s "to". Po těch, která jsou označena hvězdičkou, může být také vedlejší věta s "that", jak je patrné z uvedených příkladů. Po slovesech označených dvěma hvězdičkami může věta s "that" následovat pouze v případě, že podmětem hlavního slovesa je "it".

Slovesa bez podstatného jména, které by předcházelo vedlejší větě s "that"

Po některých slovesech následuje vedlejší věta s "that", přičemž před ní nestojí podstatné jméno (i když před infinitivem by stálo). Týká se to sloves command, direct, entreat, implore, order, require & trust.

Příklady

I trust you to tell the truth.
I trust that you are telling the truth.
The general commanded his men to surrender.
The general commanded that his men surrender.

Slovesa, kde před vedlejší větou s "that" stojí podstatné jméno

U jiných sloves naopak je podstatné jméno před vedlejší větou s "that" nutné (stejně jako by stálo před infinitivem). Platí to o slovesech persuade & remind.

Příklady

You can't persuade people to buy small cars.
You can't persuade people that small cars are better.
He reminded me to take my notebook to school.
He reminded me that I would need my notebook.

Slovesa, u nichž je podstatné jméno před vedlejší větou s "that" možné, ne však nutné

Poslední skupinu tvoří slovesa, kde podstatné jméno před vedlejší větou s "that" stát může, ale nemusí. To platí o slovesech instruct, teach & warn.

Používání slovesa "dare"

V záporných větách a otázkách je možný infinitiv s "to" i bez něj, pokud obě slovesa mají stejný podmět (přičemž běžnější je "to" vynechat). Jestliže se podmět těchto dvou sloves liší, je nutné použít "to".
