Závorky

Rozlišujeme dva druhy závorek – kulaté (parentheses) a hranaté [brackets]. V angličtině dnes však stále častěji slyšíme 'round brackets' a 'square brackets'.

Hranaté závorky [ ] se obvykle používají v odborných textech – např. v manuálech. Kulaté závorky ( ) se používají podobně jako čárky, tedy zejména
v situacích, kdy chceme dovysvětlit, dodat či okomentovat něco, co souvisí s naší hlavní myšlenkou, ale je to už něco jiného. Mnoho teoretiků gramatiky se domnívá, že závorky mohou být téměř ve všech situacích nahrazeny čárkami.
